Networking

For this networking opportunity, I visited the Long Beach museum of Art. I went on a Sunday, because that is when the admission is free. The day I went, I arrived early, so there wasn’t a lot of people, but it did eventually pick up. When I first got there I was a little nervous of talking to anyone, so I decided to look around at the art. After browsing around the museum, I decided to talk to the curator at the front desk. I only asked them a few questions, and the first one was about their hiring process. She told me that they aren’t currently hiring and that jobs are typically posted on their website when they are available. I asked her how long she had worked there, and she told me she’s been working there for 8 years as a guest service and membership coordinator. The last question I was able to ask her was how does someone go about becoming a guest service and membership coordinator, and she briefly told me how she did it. She said that she had previous experience working in guest services at the Queen Mary while she was in school earning a degree in Art History. She said she later worked at the MOOLA doing volunteer work, and was able to gain experience doing much of what she is doing now. I wasn’t able to ask all of the questions I had, because I didn’t want to distract her from her work of attending to other guests. I asked her for an email address for any other questions I had and she gave me her museum email address. I emailed her the rest of my questions and am waiting to hear back from her.
